Garage Goals: From Chaos to Calm (Yes, Really)

May 01, 20252 min read

The garage: home to unfinished DIY projects, mismatched gardening gloves, and holiday decorations from 2012. It’s the final frontier of home organizing. And for many of us, it’s where dreams of parking your car go to die.

If your garage is more storage unit than functional space, you’re not alone. But May is the perfect time to take it back—and I promise it’s possible, even if you haven’t seen the floor in years.

In this blog, I’m showing you how to reclaim your garage as a usable, organized, and dare I say, peaceful space. Whether you want to park your car, set up a home gym, or just stop tripping over soccer balls, it starts with a plan.

  1. Zone it like a pro

Think of your garage like a grocery store. Tools go in one area, sports gear in another, and holiday decorations in another. Group like with like and assign every category a dedicated zone. Bonus: labeling bins = game changer.

  1. Purge what’s past its prime

Old paint cans, rusted folding chairs, broken snowblowers—sound familiar? The garage tends to be a graveyard for “just in case” items. If it hasn’t been touched in 2+ years, it might be time to part ways.

  1. Use vertical space

Your garage has walls for a reason. Pegboards, shelving units, overhead storage racks—these are your best friends. Get stuff off the floor and into accessible storage that doesn’t involve a ladder every time you need a wrench.

  1. Seasonal storage with intention

Keep frequently-used items like lawn tools and sports gear within reach. Rotate out-of-season items to less accessible spots. A little effort now = less digging later.

  1. Set it and forget it (almost)

Once it’s organized, maintain it with monthly 10-minute resets. Hang bikes back up, return tools to their hooks, and scan for things to toss. It’s like brushing your teeth—small effort, big payoff.

Your garage can be more than a glorified junk drawer. With the right systems, it can serve your family instead of swallowing your stuff. Let’s turn it into a space you’re proud of.
